Megan Rapinoe is an American soccer midfielder currently playing for Philadelphia Independence of Women’s Professional Soccer and is a member of the United States women’s national soccer team.
She helped the U.S. win the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the gold at the 2012 London Olympics, and finish runners-up at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Since 2018, she co-captains her national team alongside Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan.
Most recently, she helped lead the U.S. team to victory oat the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. For her performance in the World Cup, she was awarded the Golden Ball as the Best Play of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and is the second American to be awarded the Golden Boot award for highest scorer.
From 2002 through 2005, Rapinoe was a member of Elk Grove Pride, which plays in Women’s Premier Soccer League. Over her 4 years, she scored 25 goals for the club.
Rapinoe was selected 2nd overall in the 2009 WPS Draft to Chicago Red Stars of Women’s Professional Soccer. In the inaugural 2009 Women’s Professional Soccer season, Rapinoe appeared in 18 games (17 starts, 1375 minutes) and scored 2 goals and assisted on 3 others. Her option was exercised by Chicago for the 2010 season and her rights remain with the club.
Megan Rapinoe first appeared for the United States U-19 team. She made 21 appearances and scored 9 goals. Her most notable appearances was in the 2004 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship.
Megan Rapinoe made her United States Women’s National Team debut on 23 July 2006 against Ireland. She scored her first (and second) senior team goal(s) on 01 October 2006 against Chinese Taipei.
