THE FINANCIAL BENEFITS OF HIRING INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES
KEYNOTE SPEECH SUMMARY

There is a group of individuals who are always overlooked regarding the diversity, equity, and inclusion conversation. The group I refer to is the disability population.

From increased productivity and employee retention to reduced absenteeism and training costs, there are countless reasons why hiring individuals with disabilities is not only the right thing to do but it also makes good business sense.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals with disabilities have an unemployment rate nearly double that of those without disabilities. Additionally, the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities has remained stubbornly high, even during periods of economic growth.

This is great news for the labor market because an underutilized talent pool is ready to work.
Disability employment is the next frontier in the fight for equality for persons with disabilities in the workplace.

What you will learn in this keynote:

Why businesses need to create an inclusive culture that welcomes and supports individuals with disabilities by providing accommodations, such as assistive technology, and offering training and support for managers and coworkers.
How businesses should actively recruit individuals with disabilities through partnerships with organizations that serve individuals with disabilities and through targeted recruiting efforts.
Why should businesses offer incentives for hiring individuals with disabilities? This can include tax credits, grants, and other financial incentives.
By creating an inclusive culture, actively recruiting individuals with disabilities, and offering incentives for hiring them, businesses can maximize their profits and gain a competitive edge in the marketplace.
John’s keynote intersects with a company employee business and affinity resource groups on multiple levels.  His intersections are as a person with a disability, a person of color, and a combat veteran.

Book John now to advance the conversation of DEI and maximize your dollars through Disability Diversity.

Talent Short Bio

John Register is an award-winning international speaker and transformation leader whose extraordinary life story demonstrates the power of resilience, reinvention, and embracing the “new normal.” A two-time Paralympian and Silver Medalist, Register’s athletic career and Olympic dreams were abruptly cut short after a training injury resulted in the amputation of his left leg. Instead of succumbing to loss, he rebuilt his life through a mindset of possibility, purpose, and disciplined action.

Register transitioned from Olympic hopeful to Paralympic champion, setting an American record in the long jump and competing in sprint events at the Paralympic Games in Sydney. Before his injury, he was a four-time All-American at the University of Arkansas and a decorated U.S. Army veteran who served during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. As part of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program, he won nine gold medals at the Armed Services Competition and two World Military Championships.

John Register is a remarkable individual whose journey from athlete to motivational speaker has inspired countless individuals worldwide. As a two-time Paralympian and Paralympic Games Silver Medalist, he embodies the spirit of resilience and determination.

Hailing from Oak Park, Illinois, Register’s life took an unexpected turn when a misstep over a hurdle during training for the 1996 Olympic Games resulted in the amputation of his leg. However, rather than allowing this setback to define him, Register embraced a “new normal mindset” and embarked on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

John Register’s expertise lies in his ability to inspire and motivate audiences to overcome adversity and embrace change. Through his powerful speeches and podcasts, he shares his own personal journey of triumph over adversity, demonstrating how individuals can amputate fear and embrace their own “new normal.”

Drawing from his experience as a Paralympian and military veteran, Register imparts valuable lessons on resilience, leadership, and the power of perseverance. Register’s background is as diverse as it is impressive. A four-time All-American graduate of the University of Arkansas, he served six years in the U.S. Army, including deployments during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

During his military service, Register distinguished himself as a decorated athlete, winning nine gold medals in the Armed Services Competition and two World Military Championships as part of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program. Register had his left leg amputated after a misstep over a hurdle changed his life. Register hyperextended his knee and severed the popliteal artery.

He started swimming to aid in his recovery, made the U.S. Paralympic Team in 1996, and later won a silver medal in the long jump—as he set an American record—and sprinted to fifth in the 100 meters and 200 meters at the U.S. Paralympic Games in Sydney.

He also is unique in that he is one of only a few inspirational leadership speakers who developed a Trademarked contextual model to Transform Adversity into Advantage: Five Steps to Conquer Life’s Hurdles. John Register is a renowned inspirational speaker who has captivated audiences worldwide with his remarkable story of resilience and determination.

However, in a tragic turn of events, he suffered a severe injury while preparing for the Olympics, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs. Rather than succumbing to despair, John Register chose to redefine his life’s purpose. He transitioned into the world of Paralympic sports, where he achieved remarkable success as a long jumper, earning numerous medals and accolades.

His story serves as a testament to the incredible resilience of the human spirit and the power of determination in the face of adversity. As an inspirational speaker, John Register draws upon his personal experiences to inspire and motivate others. He shares the lessons he has learned about overcoming obstacles, adapting to change, and finding new ways to achieve success. His speeches are characterized by their authenticity and heartfelt delivery, making them relatable and impactful for audiences of all backgrounds.

John Register’s message extends beyond sports and disability. He emphasizes the importance of embracing change, setting goals, and pushing beyond perceived limitations. He encourages individuals to tap into their inner strength and creativity to conquer challenges, whether they are personal or professional. His talks are not just about physical resilience but also about the resilience of the human spirit.

John Register CSP – Amputate Fear, Embrace Your New Normal Mindset

In this high-impact keynote highlight, Paralympic Silver Medalist and transformation expert John Register challenges audiences to adopt a winning mindset by creating a clear game plan, amputating limiting beliefs, and embracing their “new normal.”

In this 2:16 keynote segment, John Register opens with a challenge: everyone wants success, but few have a real game plan. He urges audiences to define their winning mindset with intention. Register explains that his greatest hurdle wasn’t the loss of his leg, but the negative stigma and limiting beliefs imposed by others.

Audience members share how his authenticity, story, and practical workshop tools helped them reflect, set goals, and identify new skills. Register emphasizes that inspiration fuels motivation, motivation drives action, and action produces transformation — results that inspire others in turn. The clip closes with a powerful call to release what no longer serves us and “amputate” the barriers that prevent growth.

Through personal storytelling, attendee reflections, and actionable insight, the video showcases Register’s signature blend of inspiration, mindset training, and practical leadership tools that empower people to overcome obstacles and transform adversity into advantage.

Key Moments

  • 00:07 – 00:14 “You don’t have a game plan for even being here — you just come to meet your friends. Is that the winning mindset that you want? What is your game plan for success?”
  • 00:14 – 00:25 [Audience member]: “I thought it was very motivating. I really liked it. I liked hearing about how he overcame the challenges, because everyone takes a different approach. For me, it’s something I can add to my arsenal…”
  • 00:25 – 00:32 “…also in the future I can say, you know, ‘How did John Register do it?’ whenever I run into an obstacle.”
  • 00:32 – 00:39 “Sometimes it’s very difficult to recognize the patterns — the patterns of the winning mindset. What are those winning mindset patterns?”

In this energizing highlight reel, Paralympic medalist and transformational speaker John Register explains how shifting from mindset to mindsight empowers individuals to embrace change, conquer adversity, and take action toward their “new normal.”

In this 2:14 clip, John Register challenges audiences to evolve beyond a fixed mindset and step into mindsight—a deeper awareness that transforms how we think, act, and lead. He shares how his life-changing injury forced him to reframe adversity, not as a limitation but as an invitation to grow.

Through audience testimonials, we hear how John’s message of resilience, possibility, and personal reinvention inspires people to re-evaluate their assumptions, set clearer goals, and take action. The video reinforces his core belief: adversity is not the end—it is the catalyst for discovering a greater version of yourself.

This 3:28 hybrid reel blends John Register’s keynote moments, audience reactions, and workshop clips to illustrate how he helps people shift from fear-driven thinking to purposeful action. John opens with the challenge of entering any room—professionally or personally—without a game plan. He contrasts wishful thinking with the winning mindset used by Olympians and Paralympians.

Throughout the reel, John emphasizes that the true hurdle is rarely the event itself; it is the negative stigma, external doubt, and limiting language people internalize from others. His message reframes adversity as a catalyst for discovering personal power and building a new normal rooted in intention rather than circumstance. Audience members describe John as authentic, relatable, and deeply practical—someone who not only inspires but equips people with tools to act immediately.

He explains that inspiration sparks motivation, motivation drives action, and action creates transformational results that reinspire others. The reel closes with John urging people to examine what they must release or “amputate” to step into their next chapter—fear, limiting beliefs, unhealthy patterns, or outdated narratives. His call to action underscores that transformation begins with a shift in mindset, reinforced by deliberate movement toward what matters most.

Talent FAQ's

Speaker fees can vary depending on factors such as expertise, demand, and event specifics. While some speakers may charge a flat fee for their services, others may have hourly rates. It’s best to discuss fee structures directly with the speaker or their representative to understand the pricing model.

Keynote speeches typically range from 30 to 90 minutes, with the duration determined by the speaker’s expertise, the event’s agenda, and audience preferences. Keynote speeches often include a combination of inspirational stories, practical insights, and actionable advice tailored to the event’s theme or objectives.

The scale of the event and audience size can indeed impact a speaker’s fee. Larger events with a broader reach or higher attendance may command higher fees due to increased exposure and demand. Conversely, smaller events or niche audiences may offer opportunities for more flexible pricing arrangements.

Travel expenses such as transportation, accommodation, and meals are typically negotiated separately from the speaker’s fee. These costs vary depending on the speaker’s location, travel distance, and event duration. It’s important to clarify travel arrangements and expenses during the booking process to avoid misunderstandings.

Many speakers require a deposit to secure a booking, with the remaining balance due closer to the event date. Deposits are often non-refundable and serve as a commitment from both parties. It’s advisable to discuss deposit requirements and payment terms with the speaker or their representative when finalizing the booking.

  • Virtual speaking appearances are a cost-effective alternative to high speaking fees, often 10-50% cheaper than in-person rates.
  • There is typically no difference in fee for a 15-minute speech versus a 60-minute speech.
