He tells the story of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, who sent his broken tea bowl to be repaired only to have it returned held together with metal staples. Dissatisfied, the shogun commissioned local craftsmen to find a method that highlighted the beauty of broken pieces. They created Kintsugi, a lacquer and gold technique that transformed fractures into points of strength. Over time, Kintsugi evolved into a symbol of resilience and perseverance.
Brant uses this metaphor to illustrate a central truth: becoming an unbreakable leader requires accepting that everyone is already broken. Rather than keeping challenges at a distance, he encourages leaders to focus on what binds them together.
