Jen Welter is a trailblazing leader, keynote speaker, and sports pioneer best known as the first woman to coach in the National Football League. As a linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals during their 2015 training camp, she broke barriers and redefined what leadership and inclusion look like in professional sports.
Before coaching, Jen made history as the first woman to play running back in a men’s professional football league with the Texas Revolution. Her career has since expanded to include coaching roles such as head coach of the Australian women’s national team and defensive specialist in professional leagues, further solidifying her reputation as a pioneer in the sport.
Holding a doctorate in psychology and a master’s in sport psychology, Jen brings a unique perspective to leadership, performance, and mindset. She is also the author of Play Big: Lessons in Being Limitless from the First Woman to Coach in the NFL, where she shares insights on overcoming barriers and achieving success.
Dr. Jen Welter is a record-breaker, and one of the most influential voices in professional football today. Best known as the first female coach in the NFL, she made history in 2015 when she joined the Arizona Cardinals as a linebackers coach—earning respect across the league and forming lasting bonds with players and staff.
Her groundbreaking NFL role was just one of many “firsts” in a career defined by courage and excellence. Dr. Welter also became the first woman to play running back in a men’s professional football league with the Texas Revolution, where she later went on to coach during the franchise’s most successful season.
With a decorated 14-year career in women’s professional football, she is a four-time world champion, a two-time gold medalist with Team USA at the IFAF Women’s World Championship, and an eight-time all-star. In recognition of her impact on the sport, she was inducted into the inaugural class of the Women’s Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
Continuing her global influence, Dr. Jen Welter served as head coach of Australia’s first women’s national team and later as a defensive specialist in the Alliance of American Football (AAF).
