Julie Holmes opens her keynote with a humorous confession: in her early sales career, she relied on “sales roadkill”, prospects rejected or neglected by competitors. While this approach earned quick commissions, it ultimately brought in high-cost, high-maintenance customers who drained company resources.
Drawing on her upbringing on an Iowa farm, Holmes shares the lesson that true business value is not about what you drag in, but what you grow and nurture. She introduces the metaphor of “hunters and farmers” in sales: hunters chase new deals, while farmers nurture existing clients. In today’s marketplace, she argues, these roles must merge. Hunters need to think long-term about relationships, and farmers must proactively identify upsell opportunities.
Holmes stresses that sales is not just the responsibility of the sales team, “whole company selling” means every employee contributes to identifying, qualifying, and nurturing opportunities. Customers themselves can also become advocates and sellers through co-marketing and loyalty.
