Allen has interviewed leading researchers in the field of creativity and talent development, ranging from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (the sociologist and bestselling author of Flow) to K. Anders Ericsson (the researcher who inspired Malcom Gladwell’s “10,000 hour rule”).
Gannett busts the myths around creativity and explains what science reveals about the latent creative potential in all of us. More importantly, he walks through actionable practices to unlock that potential.
For Allen’s book, he met with dozens of creative achievers ranging from Oscar and Tony winners Pasek and Paul, the co-creators of Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land, and The Greatest Showman; Nina Jacobson, the legendary producer of Crazy Rich Asians, The Hunger Games, and American Crime Story; to billionaires like David Rubenstein, the co-founder of Carlyle Group.
He unearthed four principles of creative discipline from these interviews that anyone can use to improve their creativity.
Pop culture references. Audience engagement. A few bad puns. Allen’s talks are known for waking people up (but, still, please don’t put him after lunch).
Some call it awkwardly charming. His mom just calls it charming. If you’re looking for a boring keynote, definitely do not book him as your speaker.

The standard view of creativity is one of constant brainstorming punctuated by sudden flashes of genius – it is not something you can be intentional or methodical about. Allen Gannett’s talk disproves this, explain how flashes of genius actually happen, and provide ways any creator can increase their odds of having one.
The talk is based on two years of research for Gannett’s book The Creative Curve. As part of this, he interviewed dozens of the world’s leading creatives such as celebrity chefs, multi-platinum musicians, billionaire entrepreneurs, and fine artists. In addition, he talked to the leading scientists and academics who study the field.
Based on this, he found four patterns — The Four Laws of Creative Curve — that all creatives engage in. These laws are not only scientifically valid, but can be followed by any aspiring creative. This talk will give a sneak peek into Gannett’s research and a look at how you can leverage it.
In a separate program, Allen Gannett explores the science of trends. Why do specific ideas take off when they do? Why do others rise then fall, causing businesses to come crashing down? Or why do some ideas fail but later work such as Apple’s first tablet computer flopping in the 90s but the iPad later ushering in the tablet era?
Based on two years of research for Gannett’s book The Creative Curve, the talk draws on dozens of interviews of the world’s leading creatives such as celebrity chefs, multi-platinum musicians, billionaire entrepreneurs, and fine artists. In addition, he talked to the leading scientists and academics who study creativity. A sneak peek into Gannett’s research, the talk provides an inside look at at how you can leverage it when it comes to understanding market behavior.
Gannett explores the neuroscience of how consumers are driven to trends that are a balance of the familiar and the novel. Consumers are fearful of ideas that are radically novel but also get bored with the overly familiar. This talk gives a clear-eyed assessment into how you can better understand consumer behavior and create products that capture attention—and market share.
His book The Creative Curve came out in 2018 from Penguin Random House. It has been featured on CNBC, Forbes, and numerous top podcasts, and has been translated into nine other languages. Most importantly, Allen Gannett was once a very pitiful runner-up on Wheel of Fortune.
