From 1991-2000, Foudy served as co-captain for the United States and took over as captain in 2001, serving through 2004. A 2007 inductee into the National Soccer Hall of Fame along with Mia Hamm, Foudy played in a total of 274 games for the United States, scoring 45 goals.

She played in four FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments and helped lead the team to victory 1991 and 1999. Similarly, Foudy played in three Summer Olympics, helping the American team to gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta games and again at the 2004 Olympics held in Athens, Greece.

In 2000, the U.S. and Julie Foudy earned a silver medal at the competition held in Sydney, Australia. In addition to her international play, Foudy competed professionally for the Sacramento Storm (1993, 1995-1998) and San Diego Spirit (2001-2003). She also played a season overseas in Sweden for Tyreso FF in 1994.

An advocate for workers and women’s rights, in 1997 Foudy was the first female to be awarded the FIFA Fair Play Award. Foudy went on to serve as president of the Women’s Sports Foundation and, in 2006, started an organization dedicated to increasing leadership abilities in young women called the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy.

Julie Foudy | USA Female Soccer Legend

In 2014, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain traveled to Brazil and hosted soccer clinics for girls. Foudy is currently a soccer broadcast analyst and can be seen on ESPN as the networks’ lead analyst during women’s soccer games. She is author of the book “Choose to Matter: Being Courageously and Fabulously YOU”

Julie Foudy was a midfielder for the U.S. Women’s National Team from 1987 through 2004, serving as a captain for 13 of her 17 years with the national team. During her national team tenure, the U.S. women won two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles (1991, 1999), captured two Olympic gold medals (1996, 2004), and the silver medal in 2000 – en-route to becoming one of the most successful national soccer teams ever in the sport.

Foudy’s retirement, ending a remarkable international soccer career with 274 matches, along with fellow women’s soccer legends Mia Hamm and Joy Fawcett, marked the end of what was generally known as the “golden era” of women’s soccer in the United States. She was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in August 2007.

A former president of the Women’s Sports Foundation (2000-02), Foudy received the 1997 FIFA Fair Play Award for her trip earlier that year to Pakistan to examine the working conditions of factories of her then-sponsor, Reebok. A 4x All-American at Stanford and the 1991 Soccer America Player of the Year, Foudy graduated in 1993, having earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. She turned down an admission into the Stanford Medical School to pursue a career in sports.
