Hemant Taneja is the CEO and Managing Director of General Catalyst, one of the world’s leading venture capital firms, and a prominent advocate for Responsible Innovation. He works at the intersection of technology, entrepreneurship and long term societal impact, helping founders build enduring, market leading companies designed for both growth and good.
In his book Intended Consequences: How to Build Market-Leading Companies with Responsible Innovation, Hemant outlines a practical framework for aligning innovation with the long term interests of society. His philosophy centers on engineering progress with greater intentionality, minimizing unintended consequences and increasing inclusivity in technology development.
Beyond his work at General Catalyst, Hemant is co founder and chairman of Responsible Innovation Labs, a nonprofit consortium focused on establishing standards that ensure technology serves the broader needs of a global society. His leadership extends into healthcare, climate and education. He serves on the Stanford School of Medicine Board of Fellows, co founded and chairs Advanced Energy Economy to advance climate and energy policy, and is a founding board member of Khan Lab School.

Hemant Taneja is the CEO of General Catalyst, and a founder, investor, and author of four books, including The Transformation Principles (2025).
His vision for General Catalyst (GC) is to be the world’s foremost technology investment company, supporting global resilience through applied AI. I first laid out his AI thesis in the 2018 book Unscaled, which explored how the economy of the future will be won by upstarts leveraging AI for hyper-focused markets. Hermant believe in investing in the critical systems that underpin modern democracies and their allies—GC’s global resilience thesis—and transforming every industry through innovative partnerships.
Hemant Taneja is an early investor in companies like Stripe, Samsara (NYSE: IOT), Snap (NYSE: SNAP), Gitlab (NASDAQ: GTLB), Grammarly, Gusto, Applied Intuition, Anduril, Ro, and Anthropic. His recent focus as an investor has been on Applied AI and sustainability with companies like Crescendo, Re:Build Manufacturing, and Charm Industrial.
Hermant’s goal is to pioneer a new model for accelerating AI transformation across critical industries through General Catalyst Transformation Companies.
