Talent Short Bio

Chris Bertish is an extreme adventurer and author who turns ocean-scale endurance into leadership lessons you can actually use. His solo expeditions become case studies in planning under pressure, executing with discipline, and recalibrating when conditions change. Chris pairs cinematic storytelling with frameworks that leadership teams can borrow to manage uncertainty, maintain momentum, and execute bold initiatives.

What sets Chris apart is the translation: how do you turn a survival moment on the water into a reliable meeting cadence, a risk register, or a habit that protects performance over months? His talks answer that question with practical tools, checklists, and accountability methods. He is equally at home inspiring a conference crowd with dramatic multimedia or running a hands-on workshop that leaves teams with a 90-day execution plan.

Organizers get both spectacle and substance: vivid visuals and emotive narrative, plus operational takeaways that leaders can implement immediately. For groups trying to move from ambition to consistent delivery, Chris provides the mental models and tactical steps that make bold goals achievable.

Chris Bertish has become a sought after global motivational keynote and TEDx guest speaker. Whether talking at corporate events or schools, his tale of overcoming obstacles to get halfway around the globe for the Mavericks competition final always has audiences clinging to the edge of their seats.

Like every successful sportsperson, team-leader, businessperson or entrepreneur, Chris Bertish knows that it’s the reasons why we do something that determine how we do it – or whether we do it at all. His mantra – Dream It. See it. Believe It. Achieve It – has led Chris to redefine his approach to success – not only across multiple sports, but also as a respected Author, Filmmaker and Businessman.

In March 2017, Chris Bertish completed his most daring challenge yet by becoming the first person to single handedly cross the entire Atlantic Ocean (over 7500 km) on a Stand Up Paddleboard over 93 days. In doing so, Chris dared to achieve what most perceive to be impossible.

Now he has his speaking series on the SUP Crossing, starting in South Africa and touring abroad. Known to inspire, educate and motivate audiences by sharing his captivating experiences, Chris delivers a spellbinding and captivating narrative complimented by a powerful audiovisual presentation that will blow your audience away. Engaging Chris to address your organisation is a worthwhile investment, as your team members will be inspired to adopt a “can do” attitude and implement the tools and skills he teaches through his powerful storytelling.

In 2010, Chris Bertish achieved a major milestone by winning the Mavericks Invitational, one of the most prestigious big-wave surfing competitions held in Northern California. This victory solidified his reputation as a formidable force in the world of surfing.

While big-wave surfing was a significant part of Bertish’s life, he had even more audacious dreams beyond conquering waves. In 2017, he embarked on a solo journey that would captivate the world and redefine the limits of what could be achieved on the open ocean. Bertish set out to paddle across the Atlantic Ocean on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP), covering over 4,050 miles from Morocco to Antigua.

This incredible journey took 93 days, during which Bertish faced monumental challenges, including brutal weather, exhaustion, and encounters with marine life. He relied on a specially designed paddleboard equipped with solar panels, satellite communication, and an emergency beacon, as well as meticulous planning and unwavering determination.

The crossing, known as the “SUP Crossing,” was not only a personal triumph but also a testament to human endurance and the capacity for individuals to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. It was also a fundraiser for various charitable causes, including the Lunchbox Fund and Operation Smile, further illustrating Bertish’s commitment to humanitarian efforts.

Talent FAQ's

Speaker fees can vary depending on factors such as expertise, demand, and event specifics. While some speakers may charge a flat fee for their services, others may have hourly rates. It’s best to discuss fee structures directly with the speaker or their representative to understand the pricing model.

Keynote speeches typically range from 30 to 90 minutes, with the duration determined by the speaker’s expertise, the event’s agenda, and audience preferences. Keynote speeches often include a combination of inspirational stories, practical insights, and actionable advice tailored to the event’s theme or objectives.

The scale of the event and audience size can indeed impact a speaker’s fee. Larger events with a broader reach or higher attendance may command higher fees due to increased exposure and demand. Conversely, smaller events or niche audiences may offer opportunities for more flexible pricing arrangements.

Travel expenses such as transportation, accommodation, and meals are typically negotiated separately from the speaker’s fee. These costs vary depending on the speaker’s location, travel distance, and event duration. It’s important to clarify travel arrangements and expenses during the booking process to avoid misunderstandings.

Many speakers require a deposit to secure a booking, with the remaining balance due closer to the event date. Deposits are often non-refundable and serve as a commitment from both parties. It’s advisable to discuss deposit requirements and payment terms with the speaker or their representative when finalizing the booking.

  • Virtual speaking appearances are a cost-effective alternative to high speaking fees, often 10-50% cheaper than in-person rates.
  • There is typically no difference in fee for a 15-minute speech versus a 60-minute speech.
